UPDATED OCTOBER 2024. Thrilling rides are a big part of the fun on Walt Disney World vacations, but the most adrenaline-inducing attractions may not be everyone's speed. Disney World theme park tickets offer various levels of heart-pumping adventure, from fast coasters to daring drops and even spooky haunts. Let's explore some of the scariest attractions so you will be well-prepared before your family’s next Disney vacation booking.

1. The Haunted Mansion

While not one of the death-defying roller coasters you will ride with your Disney World Orlando tickets, The Haunted Mansion offers a different sort of scare. The spooky voices and ghostly apparitions may not faze adults and older kids, but the littlest thrill seekers will love exploring the dark mansion with its eerie surprises along the way. The Haunted Mansion is appropriate for all ages and heights, but younger visitors may find it all a bit too ghoulish.

2. Twilight Zone Tower of Terror

For anyone who loves a good free-fall drop, Twilight Zone Tower of Terror is the Disney World attraction for you. Based on the supernatural Twilight Zone television show, this attraction welcomes you with a spooky tale, lifts you high into the air in an ancient elevator, and then drops you from heights of up to 130 feet. The scariest part, however, might be the anticipation before the drops, as there is no indication of when they're coming. You must be at least 40 inches to enjoy this ride. From there, use your thrill-seeking discretion.

3. Space Mountain

Space Mountain is an iconic Disney World attraction, sending you on a rocket ship to deep, dark outer space. Expect an out-of-this-world setting and a moderate-speed roller coaster ride, surprising drops, and exciting twists and turns. Space Mountain runs in darkness, increasing the fear factor and suspense. The height requirement is 44 inches tall, making it an excellent option for older kids.

4. Pirates of the Caribbean

If the Pirates of the Caribbean movies gave you a thrill, you’re going to love the ride. While this is a fun adventure for the whole family and does not include any terrifying drops, there are a few elements that may get your heart racing. The attraction is filled with realistic effects and details, including cannon fights and a certain Captain Jack popping in to surprise you.

5. Mission: SPACE

Mission: SPACE can be found at Future World in Epcot. This ride is a space simulation featuring G-force elements and introducing riders to realistic astronaut training exercises. If you've ever wondered what joining NASA is like, this ride's for you. The realistic detail makes this attraction thrilling, and, yes, scary. Break up into Navigator, Commander, Pilot, and Engineer roles, and select your death-defying mission. Whether you want to journey to Mars or orbit the Earth, Mission: SPACE is an excellent option for the biggest thrill seekers.

6. Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run

Millennium Falcon can be found in Hollywood Studios for Star Wars fans at least 38 inches tall. This dark and intense journey through hyperspace is nearly five minutes long. Millennium Falcon is not a traditional roller coaster but is another flight simulation ride. This ride is not for the faint of heart or those who do not enjoy enclosed spaces. Each passenger will be assigned the role of either pilot, gunner, or engineer for the duration of the space exploration journey.

7. Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance

Another favorite in Hollywood Studios, and many would say the main attraction of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge is this ride! A classic battle of the Dark Side versus the Resistance, you’ll enjoy encounters with iconic Star Wars heroes and villains on this journey through space.

8. Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster

For a classic roller coaster experience, the Rock' n' Roller Coaster at Hollywood Studios fits the bill. Expect an intense ride filled with corkscrews, drops, and loop de loops, all set on the streets of Los Angeles. This ride will take you in seconds from zero to 57 miles an hour. Classic rock 'n' roll music by Aerosmith accompanies all the screams and thrills.

9. Expedition Everest

Head back to Disney’s Animal Kingdom for a terrifying journey to the snowy mountain peaks of Expedition Everest. For an extra thrill, try riding this roller coaster after dark. This exciting attraction will take you through the Himalayan mountains, glaciers, forests, and waterfalls. You may even spot a Yeti. You will reach 50 miles per hour speeds, encounter broken tracks, an 80-foot drop, and moments of darkness. Riders must be at least 44 inches tall to ride this one, and those without the need for speed may want to steer clear.
If you thrive on thrill rides and adventure, you will find plenty of thrills on a Disney vacation. There's something for everyone, From high-speed coasters to surprising free falls, space flight simulators, realistic special effects, and terrifying animatronics.
