Walt Disney World Resort is the perfect family vacation destination with so much incredible entertainment and a huge list of attractions that everyone can enjoy together. However, there are some attractions that require riders to be a certain height. Because it's Disney, they've thought of everything and how to make it a magical experience for everyone.

What to Do with Young Kids During Rider Switch

Enter Rider Switch, also known as Child Swap at Disney World. Whatever you want to call it, the basic premise of Rider Switch is that groups with small kids who don't quite measure up to the ride requirements can still enjoy the attractions without waiting in line twice. The process changed slightly with Lightning Lane, but is relatively the same as when it first debuted.

How to Use Rider Switch at Disney World

To use Rider Switch at Disney World, your whole group will visit the Cast Member at the entrance of the queue to let them know you'd like to use Rider Switch. It is important to make sure to have your whole party with you during this time!

The Cast Member will scan your ticket, MagicBand+ or My Disney Experience digital ticket and you'll be given a return time to ride, similar to Lightning Lane. The first group, without the smaller child, will be able to wait in the designated queue to ride the attraction. Once they've finished riding, the second group will be able to ride when that return time hits and do so by going through the Lightning Lane queue.

Depending on how long lines are, one group will most likely have a longer wait, while the other will have quite a short wait. We recommend using the Rider Switch in conjunction with Lightning Lane to get as short of a wait as possible for everyone.

Either way, that still leaves kids that will need to be entertained during both waits. To make it easy, we've compiled a list of attractions with minimum height requirements and ideas to keep smaller children occupied during longer and shorter wait times. This way you’re prepared and know what’s nearby so you can keep little ones busy during the Rider Switch wait time.

Rider Switch Rides at Magic Kingdom

The Barnstormer: This preschooler attraction is built for guests 35 inches and taller, but since it's located in Fantasyland, there are plenty of things nearby for even littler ones to enjoy. You can run off and join the circus with Donald Duck and Goofy, who are waiting to meet you under the Big Top at Pete’s Silly Sideshow (a 20 minute show) or ride Dumbo the Flying Elephant.

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad: After you drop off the older crew at this thrill ride in Frontierland you can wander on over to Country Bear Musical Jamboree for an adorable show for all ages. Or stick around these parts and enjoy a snack and some countryside scenery.

Seven Dwarfs Mine Train: Next to this thrill ride, little ones will love to ride The Many Adventures of Winnie the Poo in an oversized Hunny Pot and get lost in the pages of A.A. Milne’s classic tales.

Don’t miss these other highlights from Magic Kingdom Park:

Space Mountain: Located in Tomorrowland, when one group gets ready to blast off into outespace your second group of rider swap pals can take a ride on the Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover. It’s a leisurely ride above it all in Tomorrowland and you’ll even get a peek inside Space Mountain.

Tomorrowland Speedway: As drivers 32 inches or taller take to the open road, you can take the smaller crew on Astro Orbiter or Buzz Lightyear Space Ranger Spin nearby. Both accommodate riders of any height.

TRON Lightcycle / Run: There’s lots of thrill rides in Tomorrowland, so if you haven’t checked off any of the Rider Switch options off the list yet, we still recommend the PeopleMover, Astro Orbiter or Buzz Lightyear Space Ranger Spin. Grabbing a bite to eat or strolling through the shops is always a good alternative as well.
