What is the difference between Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Nayarit?

When planning a trip to Mexico’s pacific coast, lots of people are drawn to the stunning locale of Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Nayarit. Being so close together, the two destinations around the Bay of Banderas are often mixed up as being one in the same.

But the differences and similarities are very important when planning a trip that’s just right for you. Between Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Nayarit is the Ameca River, which also divides the states of Jalisco (home to Puerto Vallarta) and Nayarit (known as Riviera Nayarit).

The Riviera Nayarit is spread out and features a lot of resort style properties. Its neighbor Puerto Vallarta, is only about 15 minutes away and has resorts as well, but also more high rise and boutique hotels.

Both areas have amazing beaches and are close to the mountains and amazing culture. Downtown Puerto Vallarta is home to the Malecon Boardwalk and a great shopping and dining district. If you're traveling in December, you'll want to be sure to check out the Our Lady Guadalupe processions that take place in the historic churches.

When is the best time to vacation in Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Nayarit?

The best time to visit Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Nayarit is November through May. And December through March is whale migration season, so that is especially awesome.
